Start with the finished footprint
A grid is not only an image setting; it is a count of physical decisions. Pick the object first, then estimate how many cells can fit across its useful width. A keychain, coaster, and framed panel can use the same subject but need different resolution because the viewer and the material footprint change.
Write the target in cells and in a physical cue such as one pegboard, a 10 cm magnet, or a 30 cm tile. That second description stops a technically crisp result from becoming a project that is too small to handle or too large to finish.
Measure the feature, not the noise
List two or three features that carry recognition: the strawberry's leafy cap, the mug handle, or a character's eye. If a feature is only one cell wide at the proposed resolution, it is fragile and may disappear when colors are simplified. Increase the grid only when that change gives the feature a stable shape.
The 24-cell strawberry keeps each visible seed as a two-cell mark and drops photographic dimples. The 48-cell version can preserve leaf veins, but it also introduces more edge cells that need manual review. The extra resolution earns its place only on the larger display piece.
Compare at the distance of use
Inspect every candidate as a thumbnail, then at the distance from which the finished object will normally be seen. At maximum zoom, a one-cell change feels important because you are looking like a map editor. At arm's length, it may be invisible while the added color sorting remains real work.
Keep the lowest resolution that communicates the subject and leaves room for a clean outline. Save a higher-resolution variant as a separate experiment, never as a silent replacement of the build-ready draft.
Scale hard-edged pixels with nearest neighbor
When a pixel-art source needs a larger preview or print, use nearest-neighbor scaling so each source pixel becomes an even block. Bilinear or smoother interpolation invents blended edge colors, which can create halos and extra palette entries before the grid converter even begins. Scaling changes display size; it does not add source detail.
For the strawberry, enlarge the 24-cell source with whole-number nearest-neighbor steps when checking the outline. If a seed is unclear in the original grid, a larger blurred preview cannot repair it. Return to the source cell or choose a different target resolution instead.
