Understand what color distance can and cannot tell you
Use deterministic nearest-color calculations as a repeatable starting point while accounting for display, lighting, material, and perceptual limitations.

Know what the number represents
A nearest-color tool can compare encoded sRGB channel values with a documented formula. That makes the result deterministic: the same input and candidate set produce the same suggestion. It does not mean the number is a complete model of human perception or of how a bead, screen, ink, and printed page will appear.
Use the result to narrow a set of candidates, then inspect the candidates in the role where they will be used. A blue that is close to a screen sample may still change the edge contrast of a bead pattern when it sits beside cream or navy.
Check context after the calculation
Compare lightness and adjacency in the whole grid, not only the color chip. Review the result under the lighting used for sorting and, when a project matters, test a small physical sample. Transparent, glossy, and matte materials can make the same nominal color behave differently.
In the blue icon example, the darker candidate wins the calculated tie-break because it protects the outline under a warm lamp. That is not a rejection of the formula; it is the documented human decision that follows a useful, repeatable shortlist.
Publish limits with every reference
A trustworthy palette page names its color space, distance method, candidate source, and rights scope. It avoids fabricated accuracy, ratings, or claims that a generic repository-authored color equals a commercial material. Keep the method visible so another maker can reproduce or question the choice.
Use the palette library to copy, download, and apply a cleared set in the creator. If the final physical result needs a correction, record the observed condition—lamp, material, neighboring colors, or print process—rather than silently changing the distance method.
