Count the cells the chart can actually use

A grid count is the upper bound: width multiplied by height. Transparent cells, holes, and intentionally omitted background can lower the number, but only after the pattern has been generated and inspected. Counting from a thumbnail tends to under-buy because empty-looking areas still contain pale or outline beads.

The calculator keeps the spare assumption visible so another maker can understand where the total came from. That is more useful than a single unexplained number copied into a shopping list.

Choose spare beads from the build context

Six percent is a reasonable starting point for a careful single build. Raise it for children, workshops, fragile designs, or colors that are difficult to replace. Lower it only when you have a full inventory and are comfortable pausing if one bead disappears.

For the 28 × 36 portrait, 1,008 cells plus 6% gives 1,068.48, which rounds up to 1,069 beads. If the final chart has 80 transparent cells, apply that omission before buying rather than subtracting it twice.
