Remove a background without damaging the subject

Background removal is not a demand for photographic perfection. It is a decision about which cells should be empty so the main silhouette reads clearly. A few intentional background cells can add a shadow or surface; random fragments make the pattern look dirty.

Check the edge at the target grid size. Hair strands, mug rims, and plant leaves that are visible in the source may be less than one cell wide and need to become a deliberate edge color or disappear.

After removing the background, inspect enclosed areas separately from the outside contour. A mug handle, bicycle frame, or letter counter can be mistaken for background and filled accidentally. Zoom out after zooming in; the pattern should still read as one shape.

For the mug example, keep the handle opening empty and use a two-cell warm gray shadow under the cup. That small choice communicates depth more effectively than retaining the entire tile wall.

Compare source and pattern before changing the palette. If the subject's proportions are stable and empty areas are intentional, stop removing pixels. More cleanup is not always more clarity, especially around light objects on light backgrounds.

Save a clean version before manual edits. This creates a safe return point when an aggressive threshold removes a useful highlight or breaks an important negative space.
