Make a pastel palette that still has readable edges
Keep a soft palette from turning into a low-contrast wash by reserving value anchors and checking adjacent colors on the actual grid.

Choose the lightest color deliberately
Pastel palettes often fail because every swatch is light, not because the hues are wrong. Choose which role can approach white and make the background serve that decision. Keep one or two darker anchors for the silhouette, eye, lettering, or seams that must survive the grid.
The lavender whale uses cream behind the body and reserves pale lilac for the main shape. If both were equally bright, the lower fin would disappear; the muted navy edge gives the viewer a simple way to read the contour.
Check adjacency instead of swatches
Two pastels can look distinct in isolation and merge when they touch. Put every pair that will share an edge into the chart and inspect it in grayscale and in the intended display. A small temperature shift can help, but it should support a lightness difference rather than substitute for one.
For the whale, mint and lilac are separated by the dark edge on the silhouette, while cream remains quiet around both. If a body seam vanishes, widen it or change its value before adding another pastel hue.
Use the result as the source of truth
Once the pastel set works on the grid, export the named colors and keep the version with the project. Do not judge the palette only from a large monitor; a phone preview and a printed chart may compress subtle differences. The creator's preview is a useful evidence point, not a guarantee for every material.
The cleared generic palette library provides downloadable starting sets without claiming a commercial brand match. Apply one in the creator, compare it with your own colors, and document any substitution that protects an important outline or focal mark.
