Keep the symbol readable first
The best icon patterns make their identity obvious before any decorative choices enter the picture. That means preserving the heart notch, star points, roofline, or camera lens shape even if you reduce the color count or swap the accent palette.
Because icons are abstract by nature, they are also a good place to learn how little information a pattern actually needs. One bold outline and one supportive fill often do more than a dozen tiny highlights.
- Test the pattern at thumbnail size before increasing grid detail.
- Treat accent colors as optional unless they define the symbol itself.
