Use the material guide as the starting point
Different bead systems and ironing papers can behave differently, so begin with the manufacturer's temperature and ventilation guidance. A web guide can help you observe the result, but it cannot replace the instructions for the material in your hand.
Test a spare bead or an inconspicuous edge when a finish matters. The goal is to learn how quickly the surface changes under your tool before the main silhouette is at risk.
Move continuously and inspect in pauses
Short overlapping passes create a more even finish than holding heat over one spot. Pale, transparent, and small edge sections may look finished sooner; inspect them after cooling instead of using the center as the timing reference.
The snowflake example uses a navy center as a stable anchor and tests a pale-blue point at the edge. If the point fuses too quickly, reduce exposure on future passes rather than heating the entire chart to match it.
Know when to stop
Stop when the piece is joined enough for its purpose and the grid still communicates its texture. Over-melting can erase holes, flatten intentional relief, and make a carefully limited palette look like a plastic plate.
Cool the piece flat, inspect both sides, and record what worked for that brand and paper. A short build note is more reusable than a universal temperature claim.
