How to Choose a Pixel Art Color Palette
Build a compact palette from contrast, temperature, and role instead of collecting swatches that look attractive but cannot work together in a grid.

Eight roles for the night garden
A compact palette is easier to sort when each color has a visible structural job.
- Structure
- ink + deep blue
- Subject
- leaf + warm green
- Accent
- two flower tones
- Light
- moon + background
Set contrast before decoration
Begin with the darkest structural color, the main subject fill, and the quietest background. Check their lightness relationship in grayscale before choosing a hue. If the subject and background have the same value, a beautiful hue difference may disappear when the pattern is viewed from across a room.
The night-garden icon uses deep blue behind the flower and a darker ink for the outer edge. The flower colors can then be warm without requiring a dozen near-identical purples to explain the form.
Add temperature with purpose
Warm colors tend to advance and cool colors tend to recede, but the relationship is contextual. Use temperature to separate roles such as subject and background, not to make every swatch novel. A single warm accent often does more work than four competing accent hues.
For the garden, warm petals sit against cool leaves and sky. The extra green is reserved for a leaf edge that needs separation; removing it would make the palette smaller but would also collapse the subject into one flat shape.
Test the palette on a real grid
A palette is proven by adjacency. Place its colors in the intended pattern and inspect the smallest features, isolated pixels, and outline boundaries. If two swatches are indistinguishable in the grid, merge them or give one a more specific role before exporting.
Use the cleared PixelBean palette pages as a reproducible starting point, then apply the selected set in the creator. Record any substitutions as decisions so a future edit does not accidentally restore colors that the physical build cannot source.
