Pastel Pixel Art Palettes — Contrast and Outline Colors

Pastel palettes often fail because every swatch is light, not because the hues are wrong. Choose which role can approach white and make the background serve that decision. Keep one or two darker anchors for the silhouette, eye, lettering, or seams that must survive the grid.

Two pastels can look distinct in isolation and merge when they touch. Put every pair that will share an edge into the chart and inspect it in grayscale and in the intended display. A small temperature shift can help, but it should support a lightness difference rather than substitute for one.
