The order matters: crop the subject, choose the physical goal, pick a rough grid, and only then compare mapping modes. If you change all four at once, you cannot tell whether a better result came from a cleaner composition or a more complex algorithm.

Use the smallest grid that preserves the subject's defining features. A larger canvas creates room for detail but also gives background noise more cells in which to appear.

Dominant-color mapping is often the better first look for icons, pets with clear markings, and objects with a strong outline. Average-color mapping can be useful for photographs with broad tonal transitions, but it may soften the edge that tells you what the object is.

The bicycle example starts with dominant colors so the blue frame and black wheels separate. On a larger poster, average colors can add the subtle frame shadow without being asked to rescue a tiny icon.

Name variants by the decision they test: `bicycle-28px-dominant`, `bicycle-40px-average`, or `bicycle-no-background`. This makes comparison concrete and protects the build-ready version from accidental experimentation.

The best setting is the one that gives the builder a readable chart at an acceptable cost. A technically richer preview is not automatically a better craft plan.
