Worked size example
For a 56 × 42 chart, 14-count Aida over one gives 4 × 3 inches = 10.16 × 7.62 cm. On 18-mesh canvas the same stitch counts give about 7.90 × 5.93 cm. A 72 × 54 tent-stitch chart matches the original size; it is not an automatic pattern conversion.
cm = stitches ÷ (count ÷ over) × 2.54Compare the same design
Size is geometric, before tension, washing or blocking. Added fabric is your chosen allowance, not a finishing recommendation. This is not a needlepoint pattern generator.

Fabric, thread and project choice
For a counted picture with visible X stitches, start with Aida and the cross-stitch calculator. For canvaswork with diagonal coverage, study tent-stitch travel and choose a canvas/thread combination by testing a swatch. Neither craft is universally better.
Cross-stitch floss strand count and needlepoint yarn thickness depend on fabric, thread and desired coverage. This page does not prescribe a universal strand count, estimate yarn length, or convert a DMC floss code into a canvas-yarn specification.
